Case 22 — Beginner glossary Q&A: complication, caliber, jewel count, power reserve

Caliber is the movement's model designation, like a part number. Two watches from different brands can share the same caliber family with different finishing or regulation. On a spec sheet it tells you what's inside and roughly what service parts are available. It doesn't tell you how well that particular example was adjusted.

Ask for a straight-on dial photo with diffuse light and no flash, the full dial in frame, and the hands placed away from the indices (10:10 isn't ideal, because it covers the upper markers). Flash flattens printing and hides lume condition. Diffuse light shows print edges, alignment and any spotting.

Case 39 — Date window centring: compare the same date at the same angle · source wording exercise

Different numerals have different optical centres. A comparison mixes two dates and unequal magnification. How can the evidence be improved?

Review focus: source wording. Retain the source wording beside any paraphrase. Use the original answer fragment “Keep the uncropped originals alongside the detail crops and distinguish…” as the discussion anchor; no new event or result is supplied.

Case 52 — Date window centring: compare the same date at the same angle · source wording exercise

Method note for “Date window centring: compare the same date at the same angle”: use “Keep the uncropped originals alongside the detail crops and distinguish…” as a row heading in a proposed working record. Put the statement, its supporting source or measurement, and any unresolved detail in separate fields. This proposes a format; it supplies no additional evidence. Retain the source wording beside any paraphrase.

Case 31 — Forum comparison archive: link the evidence and the correction

A comparison has been corrected after a new photograph arrived. How should the original thread remain useful?

The calendar interval is a conservative default, not a rule. Useful signs, in rough order of seriousness: power reserve noticeably shorter than spec from full wind, rate drifting outside its usual range, the watch stopping on the wrist, gritty or rough winding, and the date changing slowly or late.

Case 12 — Model comparison: dive bezel action and alignment, how to compare fairly

Summary table proposal: click count, back-play (none, slight, noticeable), click consistency around the rotation, and alignment (straight-on photo, offset in fractions of a click). With that, the thread can compare actual properties instead of trading adjectives. Dated corrections welcome below.

Case 17 — Bracelet fit: measuring the usable clasp adjustment

A nominal case diameter says little about a bracelet that cannot be shortened enough. How should a sizing question be documented?

Case 57 — Maintenance question: how do I tell if an automatic actually needs service? · source wording exercise

Reader check for “Maintenance question: how do I tell if an automatic actually needs service?”: distinguish the discussion point “Useful signs, in rough order of seriousness: power reserve noticeably shorter…” from its proposed application. The thread offers a way to reason about the question, without adding a personal experience or a newly observed outcome. Review focus: source wording. Retain the source wording beside any paraphrase.

Clarification for “QC photographs: perspective or a genuinely tilted index?”: the point beginning “Request a level straight-on image with the hands…” belongs to the question as written. It should not be read as a report that a new check, purchase or experiment has been completed. Review focus: source wording. Retain the source wording beside any paraphrase.

Start with how you measured it. Comparing against a phone clock once a day for a week, at the same time, and noting the offset is reliable enough. One 24-hour reading isn't, because rate depends on wrist time, position overnight and state of wind. Average across several days before deciding anything.

Add lug-to-lug, thickness and lug width as separate rows. Diameter alone tells you little about wearability. Two cases 2mm apart in diameter can be within 1mm of each other lug to lug, and that number decides whether the watch overhangs a small wrist. Also give the source for each figure: manufacturer sheet, caliper measurement, or catalogue listing.

Method note for “Lume comparison: keep exposure and charging conditions consistent”: use “Treat the comparison…” as a row heading in a proposed working record. Put the statement, its supporting source or measurement, and any unresolved detail in separate fields. This proposes a format; it supplies no additional evidence. Keep the stated question separate from any broader claim.

A bright initial glow followed by a steep drop is normal for photoluminescent pigments. Afterglow fades fastest in the first minutes and then settles to a dim, long-lasting level that dark-adapted eyes can still read. The real question is whether it's readable after an hour in darkness, not how it looks right after charging.

Wrist size changes during the day and with temperature, sometimes by several millimetres. A fit that feels tight in the afternoon may be right in the morning. Before buying parts, check the fit at different times. You may find the 'too tight' setting is only a problem a few hours a day.
